When you're running a small business, it's easy to focus on serving clients, managing expenses, and growing revenue. But what about planning for your own future?

The good news is that small business owners have several retirement savings options designed specifically for self-employed individuals and small teams.

✅ Setting aside savings on a consistent basis
✅ Taking advantage of potential tax benefits
✅ Choosing a plan that fits your business size and goals
✅ Building a strategy that can grow alongside your business

Many people create beneficiary designations when they open a retirement account, life insurance policy, or investment account, then rarely look at them again.

However, major life events can change your intentions over time, including:

✅ Marriage or divorce
✅ The birth of a child or grandchild
✅ The loss of a loved one
✅ Changes in your estate planning goals
✅ Retirement or other major life transitions

Keeping your beneficiaries up to date can help ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes and can help reduce unnecessary complications for your loved ones.

A beneficiary review doesn't take long, but it can be an important part of maintaining your overall financial plan.

Fall is here, and year-end will be here before we know it.

Have you checked in on your tax picture lately?

This can be a good time to review your withholding, estimated tax payments, charitable giving, capital gains or losses, and retirement contributions with your tax professional.

A September review can help you spot anything that may need attention while there’s still time to plan.

Many parents want to do everything they can to help their children pay for college. While supporting your child's education is a meaningful goal, it's important not to lose sight of your own retirement plans.

Remember: there are many ways to fund an education, including scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and student loans. There are far fewer options available to fund retirement.

As you plan for both goals, consider:
✅ Prioritizing contributions to retirement accounts
✅ Creating a realistic college savings strategy
✅ Exploring 529 plans and other education savings options
✅ Reviewing your overall financial goals regularly
✅ Striking a balance between supporting your children and protecting your future

Helping your children succeed is important, but so is ensuring your long-term financial security. A well-balanced plan can help you work toward both goals with confidence.

Inheriting a home can be both meaningful and complicated.

There may be memories attached to it, but there may also be taxes, repairs, insurance, family opinions, and ongoing costs to think through.

Selling, renting, or keeping the property can each have different financial and emotional tradeoffs.

If you’ve inherited property, take a step back before making a quick decision. A clear plan can help you protect the asset, reduce stress, and choose the path that makes the most sense for your future.

Helping adult children get on their feet and building your own retirement savings aren't mutually exclusive. Plenty of families find a rhythm that supports both, especially with a little intention up front.

A few questions that can help you find that balance:

✅ Is this a one-time gift or an ongoing commitment?
✅ How does this fit alongside your retirement savings goals?
✅ Have you and your kids talked openly about what feels sustainable for everyone?

Putting a plan in place can help you feel good about supporting your family without losing sight of your own future.

Most business owners have a plan for growth. Fewer have a plan for the unexpected.

If you were suddenly unable to run your business, would someone know what to do? Who has access to accounts, key documents, or client relationships?

A continuity plan outlines who steps in, how operations continue, and how your family is protected financially.

A little preparation now can spare your family a lot of uncertainty later.
