You paid your credit card ON TIME — in full — and your score still dropped. Here's the trap nobody explains: your card has TWO dates. The due date (your deadline to avoid late fees) and the statement closing date (the day your issuer snapshots your balance and reports it to the bureaus). Most issuers report right after the statement closes. So a $900 balance on closing day is what the bureaus see — even if you paid it off the next morning. That snapshot is your utilization: 30% of your FICO score. The fix: pay BEFORE the statement closing date, not just the due date. Applying for a mortgage or funding soon? You were taught this wrong: paying off your credit cards helps your score — but paying off your installment loan can make it dip. Here's why: credit mix (10% of FICO), average account age (15%), and the temporary-dip effect. The honest reframe: the dip is usually small and fades — your on-time payments already banked the win (payment history = 35%).
Practical rule: mortgage or major application in the next 60–90 days? Let the loan ride; pay it off after you're funded. No application coming? Pay it off and move on.
