Flag Day is a special moment each year to appreciate the history behind the Stars and Stripes. While we all recognize the American flag, many people don’t know the stories that helped shape this national symbol.
Our team at The Wright Choice Insurance Group thought it would be fun to share a few lesser-known facts about the flag:
• The 50-star design was created by a 17-year-old student from Ohio. Robert G. Heft submitted it for a school project, and President Eisenhower selected it from more than 3,000 designs.
• The United States has had 27 official flag versions, most updated simply to add stars as new states joined the Union.
• Red, white, and blue weren’t chosen at random. Early leaders associated red with valor, white with purity, and blue with vigilance and justice.
• Six American flags are standing on the moon today—first placed by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during Apollo 11, with five more missions following.
• Our current flag is the longest-running design in U.S. history, lasting since Hawaii became a state in 1959.
