An item is not automatically removed from a credit report simply because the underlying debt was paid. Consumers may, however, negotiate with a creditor to have the creditor agree to delete the item from their credit report in exchange for payment or settlement of the debt. This is called a payment for deletion and is optional for the creditor. If a creditor agrees to a payment for deletion, it is important to get the agreement in writing prior to paying the debt as agreed to. Also, keep in mind that a payment for deletion involving a settlement (i.e., paying less than the actual amount owed) may re-age the debt so that the seven year clock restarts. This would allow the settlement to be reported from seven years from the date of the settlement. Be sure to discuss this with your creditor if you negotiate for a payment for deletion.

In the event that a creditor will not agree to a payment for deletion, you may be able to dispute or challenge the negative information with the credit bureau. If the negative information is found by the credit bureau to be inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable then the credit bureau is required by federal law to either correct the information or remove it. In addition, it is important to note that a creditor may be more likely to remove negative information reported to a credit bureau if the account has been paid in full.
