Should I have life insurance outside of my employer's coverage?
It's a question that often comes up.
Here are a few reasons you should consider life insurance outside your employer's coverage.
Remember, the cost of life insurance is based on your age and health conditions. The costs continue to increase as you get older and acquire more health conditions. You can reach a point where you can no longer get insurance.
First, you may not be covered enough by your work's policy. For example, many employers only provide coverage for a fraction of the employee's annual salary. This can leave your family to rely on the remaining savings and investments if you should pass away prematurely.
Or on the flip side, they may provide 2-times or 3-times your salary, for example, which can leave a false sense of security.
Second, if you leave or lose your job, you could lose your life insurance coverage and have no protection. Similarly, if you switch jobs, you may no longer be eligible for your employer's coverage. Also, when you retire, you may lose the coverage, or if you can continue it, the cost can increase dramatically without the employer subsidy and based on your age and health conditions at that time and no longer be affordable.
Third, you may face medical exclusions that allow your employer to terminate your policy if they determine your health has deteriorated. "If you rely heavily on group insurance and then suffer a medical condition that forces you to leave your job, you may be losing critical protection for your family." Having your own life insurance policy gives you more choice and control in how your coverage is designed and what benefits it provides, from payout amounts to portability to your ability to name a beneficiary or to cash out your policy. You can own a policy that has a premium that will never increase on you as you get older or acquire additional medical conditions. Unlike an employer group life insurance program, where the costs can increase every year or every five years or so, depending on the program you are in.
You should consider buying an individual policy if you rely solely on group life insurance.
The Protect Your Family Team can help you select a separate life insurance policy to meet your family's needs.
Like many things in life, a balanced approach is important.
Take advantage of employer group life insurance for the cheap additional coverage it usually provides during your working years, but also have some coverage that you own and control to provide continued coverage for your family regardless of what comes your way from a job standpoint.
