Insurance Intro Part 5

Tomorrow's Insurance Intro will be the finale for the intros.

I ended up leaving United Insurors/First State Insurance in November 2020 because.......
Lauren had missed 7 of the first 9 weeks of school because someone around her caught the Vid-19. Our whole house caught it, she went back to school, two-three days later one of her classmates tested positive, she went back to school, two-three days later was invited to a sleepover and one of those kids tested positive. So she And each time she was out was for two weeks. I figured if she was going to be out of school this much, I needed to be home.

I started looking for a work-from-home insurance job, found an ad with Leavitt Group, was interviewed, offered the job, and took the job. Problem was, I working 9am-7pm because the agency I was assigned to was in Arizona.

Basically, I was a call-center for this particular agency. Vehicle changes, mortgage company changes, person bought a different house, needed to insure a travel trailer, kinda did it all. I eventually floated to other agencies in California, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Texas, and Missouri.

One major thing I learned during my time at Leavitt Group was "clients don't really care where you (the agent) are located, they wanted to be able to get ahold of you." For example: If you call me, does it really matter if I am home, in my office, at Walmart, on vacation? For the most part, it doesn't matter as long as I can be of help.

Leavitt Group ended up laying me off (along with 6-7 others) middle of February 17, 2026. I've wrote about this earlier. All in all, they were good to me. I know the natural reaction is to say bad things about the employer who laid off employees, but I can't. I can't because without being forced into the job market, I would not have found this opportunity to start my own agency after 23-ish years.

Tomorrow, I will end this intro series on how I ended up opening this agency thru Farmers (Chad Sherrer Agency - Farmers Insurance).

These posts are meant to learn more about me and they may help someone understand the type of insurance agent I want to be and insurance agency I want to operate. I'm mixing new-school ideas with old-school mentality. The long-term goal of this agency is to be your hometown agency, wherever you are with trusted experience and local dedication.

Thanks all

Insurance Intro Part Four

Yea, these are getting long, but we are almost done. 🀣

In June 2015, I moved over to United Insurors (currently First State Insurance) and stepped up into an agent/csr hybrid role. Account manager is the fancy way of saying it.

Chris Meckem contacted me because they were going to have an opening. At the time, health insurance was mandatory and we were paying $400+/month for just Lauren and I. So being able to get group health insurance and cut the cost to $150/month, making the move made sense.

I am very appreciative of his dad (and owner) Bruce Meckem.
Bruce didn't micro-manage me. There was enough trust in me that if I needed help, I'd ask. But he let me be on my own, make my mistakes, fix them, and take care of the clients.

Then the office transitioned to First State Bank/Insurance and we went thru the pandemic. So much changed in life, the office, business, every single thing changed during that time. Who remembers spraying the mail with Lysol AND letting it sit 24 hours? I say that to say, life was changing, which means the business has to change, which means everything else downstream has to change.......including my next place of employment.

Looking back, my biggest takeaways are:
1. I was not micro-managed.
2. Bruce, Chris, and Max were great to me.
3. I got to stand on my own because I was the "agent/account manager".
4. Learned better how to work with a bank regarding insurance.

Thanks all

Insurance Intro Part Three

This next stop truly shaped me for the type of insurance agent I want to be.

My next stop was working for Scott Chase - State Farm local office. This whole story starts a few months back before I joined the team. In March 2008 (I had taken a few months to recoup from the last year+), I was purchasing a house and needed insurance. Closing was in a few days and I totally forgot to contact Scott's office to get a quote. Walked in the office, talked to Brenda Purcell Nutter, wrote the auto and home, and while I was there she asked if I was looking to get back to work.

Next week, I got a call from Scott asking if I'd like to interview for a soon-to-be opening at his office. After sitting out six months, I jumped at the chance and started May 2008. The reason for the opening is Nellie (Annette Hough), was moving to Springfield - this comes back into play later in the story.

Working with Scott and Brenda allowed me to sit under two knowledgeable successful insurance people. I really had to step-up my knowledge, my customer service skills, and be more professional. But one thing that interested me more in getting to work there was the environment. No, I'm not saying anything negative about any other work environment.......I am saying the environment at Scott's office was the environment I needed to be in at that exact time in my life.

When the Daily Record started their awards for Favorite (fill in blank started), I know we won Favorite Insurance Office the first two years and I think we might have won the first three. Granted, I'm just riding the coattails of Scott and Brenda......but I was there too.

In May/June 2015, I started to feel it was time to move forward. For me to keep growing in insurance, I needed to take the next step forward. At that time, health insurance was a major factor for everyone. We were paying $400+/month for just Lauren and I. Well, as luck would have it, another agency in town contacted me about working for them. Add a little pay increase, but the group health insurance cost decreased to $140/month, I had to say yes.

My wonderful time at Scott's office was May 2008 to June 2015. And wouldn't you know it, I got the job because Nellie was leaving, and I gave up the job because Nellie was coming back. Yep, I kept the seat warm enough for Annette to come back. Incredible timing.

Looking back, my biggest takeaways are:
1. Scott is/was the traditional insurance agent, not solely focused on sales, focused on his client's protection.
2. I developed most of habits and traits during this period.
3. Brenda put up with a lot from me as I was maturing, but she did so because she saw more in me that needed to develop.
4. Being comfortable talking to anyone - high or low.
5. An incredible work environment.

I simply cannot say enough good things about my time at Scott's office. I am very honored to have had the opportunity to work there. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from both Scott and Brenda.

Next, will be another major influencer in my insurance career. I stepped up to an agent/csr role with (at the time) the largest independent insurance agency in the county if not surrounding counties as well.

Thanks all

Intro part two......

Last week we ended on how I got started in the insurance industry by getting fired from Le Creuset and started at W. D. Waterman Insurance in October 2002.

Bill Nichols was the owner of W. D. Waterman Insurance. He allowed me to make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, fix those mistakes, encourage me when I was down, and....knock me down a few pegs when I got big-headed. I remember getting Bill a figurine that said "One day my ship will come in, but I'll be at the airport".

Bill was old school. We used the real Polaroid cameras to take pictures of homes, faxed change forms in, used microfiche (look that up kids) for policy documents, mailed off applications, and did quotes out of the book. Long before computer quoting, there was quoting out of the book.....yes, I'm that old.

I mentioned that I owe my insurance career to Eric Leochner because he was the one who got me hired. I was 22 when I started at the agency and knew nothing. He helped me grow up, not take everything personally, develop thicker skin, and understand 'the job'. You know, sometimes you don't wanna go to work but you have to because your customers are expecting you to be enjoyable.

Eric's passed away October 2006. That's one of those days I can recite every minute. Tough tough day. His passing started to teach me one of life's hardest lessons - "the world keeps turning".

My time at W. D. Waterman Insurance lasted til Thanksgiving 2007. I had to step away and process the past 14 months so that I could "move forward". Life happened and the world kept turning.

Looking back, my biggest takeaways are:
1. Old school. Being about the person, not the sale.
2. Developing a thicker skin.
3. Learning to own my mistakes.
4. Moving forward.

So that's takes us from October 2002 to November 2007.
Intro part three, next week.

Intro part one

Since this business (and business page) are still in the infancy stage, I wanted to talk about myself (it is my page after all 🀣). Because not everyone who reads this post knows me. And learning more about me may help someone understand the type of insurance agent I want to be and insurance agency I want to operate.

In the beginning........I got fired.
What better way to build confidence than saying I got fired? 😁
But, truth is truth.
Back in high school I worked at the Osage Beach Outlet Mall for a kitchen store called Famous Brands Housewares. After college, I went back to work at the outlet mall because they opened a new store Le Creuset and I was initially hired as an assistant manager. In those days (1996-2000), the outlet mall gave out these coupon booklets for basically 10% off each store. The mall would get bus loads, yes literal bus loads, of people from St Louis or Kansas City or other areas just to shop. And if your store wasn't in the coupon book, they didn't shop your store. So, I asked the question to the district manager, what happens if someone asks if we are in the coupon book, and I was told to tell each person the store would do 10% off.
Fast forward 2-3 months, corporate is auditing the store (new stores were audited every quarter) and the district manager fired me for giving unauthorized discounts. Yep. He that gives also takes-away.
Like any 21 year old with a car payment and no job, I started complaining. Complaining to anyone who would listen. And I was in a bowling league at the time with Eric Leochner. He told me his office was having a lady retire and they need a replacement. I thought to myself....."Hmmm, Monday-Friday, no weekends, 9-5, desk job. I'm interested." And that is how my insurance career started.....because I got fired.
That was October 2002. Passed the insurance license exam April 2003. And here we are 23 years later, opening a Farmers Insurance agency in my hometown.

We've got a lot more ground to cover about my career, my influences, my insurance background, stories and stories.

Thanks all
