Hard to believe we are almost through the first quarter of 2026.

The new year is set to bring major changes at the Federal Reserve, with implications for interest rates, housing, and the broader economy.

Fed officials have signaled that further rate cuts are unlikely before spring, setting up tension with President Donald Trump, who has called for much lower rates. Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s term expires in May, with Trump expected to name a successor in early January.

Before stepping down, Powell will oversee three more FOMC meetings, while January brings new regional Fed presidents onto the panel and the expiration of Gov. Stephen Miran’s term. The future of Fed Gov. Lisa Cook is also uncertain, as the Supreme Court weighs Trump’s effort to remove her.
