Have you ever heard of someone losing their home in an automobile accident? It happens all of the time, all you do is take your eyes off the road for a second and run a red light. You broad side another vehicle critically injuring four people. You have $300,000 in bodily injury coverage, the problem is that their injuries add up to 1.5 million dollars. That means that you are personally liable for 1.2 million dollars. If you do not have that kind of money available the layers will go after all assets you have including your home. If you have a $1 million dollar umbrella policy you have coverage for anything above and beyond your liability limits on your underlying policies.
