Five things to check before your enrollment window closes:

1. Life insurance — work coverage is usually 1–2× salary, and it doesn't follow you when you leave.
2. Disability — it protects the paycheck everything else depends on.
3. HSA vs. FSA — one rolls over and grows. The other evaporates at year-end.
4. The match — contributing less than the full employer match is leaving pay behind.
5. Beneficiaries — the names on file override your will. Make sure they still match your life.

Credit utilization is the quietest number on your credit report — and one of the loudest in your score.

It's the share of your available revolving credit you're using. A $2,000 balance on a $5,000 limit = 40% — and 40% is too high. Utilization feeds the "amounts owed" category: 30% of your FICO score, the second-biggest factor there is.

The rule:
Under 30% — good.
Under 10% — ideal.

Two honest ways to bring it down:
1. Pay the balance down.
2. Request a higher limit — same balance, lower percentage.

Lower percentage. Higher score. Better future.

We share this one carefully, because the goal is preparation — never fear.

Researchers found that people diagnosed with cancer were about **2.65 times more likely** to file for bankruptcy than people without cancer — and the risk was highest for younger patients, who have mortgages, young kids, and the fewest safety nets. (Ramsey et al., Health Affairs, 2013.)

Nobody can schedule a diagnosis. But a family CAN decide, in a calm month like this one, what would pay the second bill if it ever arrived. That's the entire point of awareness. 💗

Will vs Trust vs TOD vs POD — four tools, four different jobs. Here's the one that surprises people: your life insurance, retirement accounts, and bank accounts with a TOD/POD designation pass by the beneficiary form on file — not by your will. If that form names someone from ten years ago, the form wins. Outdated beneficiaries are the most common costly mistake we see, and they take minutes to check. This week, pull every designation and read it. Need a second set of eyes? Book an estate planning review: https://mywealthbuildingblocksappointments.as.me/?appointmentType=94052831

Read this twice: in a 2024 national survey, 47% of cancer patients and survivors had medical debt from their cancer — and **98% of them were insured** when the debt happened. Half owed more than $5,000; most carried it longer than a year. (ACS CAN Survivor Views, 2024.)

Insurance did its job — it paid the hospital. The debt grew in the gap around it: deductibles, time away from work, travel, childcare, help at home. That gap is called *financial toxicity* in the research, and it's the part a family can actually prepare for. 💗

Annual enrollment is open at most workplaces — and the most common move is no move at all.

Whatever you don't touch quietly rolls into next year. But last year's benefits were built for last year's life. New baby? A raise? Your spouse changed jobs? Your coverage should know about it.

Give it 20 minutes before your deadline. And if you want a second set of eyes on your options, book a free consultation — link in bio.

It's National Estate Planning Awareness Week (Oct 19–25) — and here's the first thing most families get wrong: a will alone doesn't avoid probate. A will tells the court what you want; it doesn't skip the court process. A complete plan usually includes a will, powers of attorney, a health care directive, up-to-date beneficiaries — and, for many families, a trust. Estate planning isn't just for the wealthy: if you have kids, a home, or accounts, you have an estate. This week we're walking through each piece, plainly. Start with a review: https://mywealthbuildingblocksappointments.as.me/?appointmentType=94052831

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — and this year, we're wearing pink AND talking about the part nobody puts on the ribbon. 🎗️💗

A diagnosis comes with two bills. Health insurance is built for the first one — the hospital. The second bill is the mortgage, the light bill, the drive to treatment, the paycheck that pauses. All month, Community Solutions Financial is covering the economics of a diagnosis — sourced, calm, and practical — and the preparation tools that exist for the second bill.

Breast cancer touches women most. Cancer touches every family. Let's talk about being ready. 💗

1 in 8. That's how many women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime (American Cancer Society, 2024).

She is a mother, a sister, a business owner, a friend. She might be in this community. Awareness is step one — and this month we add step two: being financially ready for a diagnosis nobody schedules. Not out of fear. Out of love for the people who'd carry the second bill.

All month: the economics of cancer, honestly, and the preparation that exists. 💗

A number on a screen disappears when the tab closes.

So the free college tool ends with a page you can print. Your schools. Your costs. The aid families like yours actually get. And your shortfall number, in black and white.

Print it. Put it where the family makes decisions. That is where college planning actually starts.

Know your number — run it free: https://csf-life-insurance.netlify.app/college-search.html
