To my Tennessee friends and customers with all the snow, ice, and fallen trees, I wanted to share a few quick insurance reminders that clear up a lot of common confusion.

A big thing to understand:
🌳 Trees are considered “unowned objects” in insurance.
What matters is what the tree damages, not who owns the tree or where it came from.

A few helpful points:

• If a tree damages your home, fence, or other insured structure, that’s typically a home insurance claim.
• Insurance generally covers the reasonable amount to get the tree off the structure and provides limited coverage to cut up and remove the tree from the property. (Check your limits or call your agent)
• A tree that falls in the yard without damaging property is not covered.

📸 If you think you may file a claim, take photos early and keep any receipts.

Whose claim is it?
• Your tree falls on your neighbor’s house → their claim
• Your neighbor’s tree falls on your house → your claim
The claim follows the damage, not the property line.

If you do have damage (trees, frozen pipes, etc.), this order matters:
1. Prevent further damage if possible.
2. Call a local contractor for an inspection and estimates.
3. Repairs can often start before a claim is filed.
4. Document everything.
5. Talk with your insurance professional before filing to make sure it’s covered and exceeds your deductible.

🚗 A tree falling on a vehicle is a comprehensive auto claim.

Lastly, please be patient with insurance teams and contractors. Storm events create peak demand, and many people helping you are dealing with the same weather issues you are.

Heads up, neighbors!
You might get someone knocking on your door claiming they “just replaced a roof nearby” and want to inspect yours. Please remember—these are salespeople.

Their goal is to sell roof replacements, not necessarily to help you. Don’t let them file an insurance claim on your behalf, and don’t sign anything on the spot.

A few missing shingles or minor damage doesn’t automatically mean you need a new roof. If you sign too quickly, you could get locked into a contract that goes beyond what your insurance will actually cover.

Always call your insurance agent first to discuss any damage and come up with a smart, informed plan of action.
