Would you know what to do immediately after a car accident?
Even a minor collision can feel overwhelming. Keeping these steps in mind can help you stay safe and gather the information needed for the claims process:
1. Check for injuries. Call 911 if anyone is injured or the accident scene presents an immediate danger.
2. Move to a safe location. If it is safe and your vehicle can be driven, move it out of traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
3. Contact the police. Report the accident and follow the responding officer’s instructions. Ask how to obtain the police report or report number.
4. Exchange information. Collect the other driver’s contact information, insurance company and policy details, driver’s license number, license plate, and vehicle information.
5. Take photos. Document all vehicles and damage, along with the roadway, traffic signs, weather conditions, and surrounding scene. If anyone witnessed the accident, ask for their contact information.
6. Avoid discussing fault. Share the facts with the police and insurance companies, but don’t argue about responsibility or admit fault at the scene.
7. Report the accident promptly. Contact your insurance company and save all photos, reports, receipts, and claim correspondence.
