💵 What is an earnest money deposit?
Earnest money is a deposit made after your offer is accepted to demonstrate that you are serious about purchasing the property.
The money is generally held in escrow and may be credited toward your closing costs or funds due at closing.
Whether it is refundable depends on the contract terms, deadlines and circumstances. Missing an inspection, financing or other contractual deadline could place the deposit at risk.
Never treat earnest money as “just another fee.” It is part of the contract and should be delivered exactly as required.
Before submitting an offer, make sure you understand the amount, deadline and protections available to you.
