that comes an increased risk for bank customers to fall victim to fraud and cyber scams.

It starts with a person getting a call from someone posing as a Clinton County deputy, telling them they missed a court appearance and needed to pay $5300 using a Bitcoin kiosk to stay out of jail. This is meant to terrify the victim who is instructed to leave work and go to the bank immediately and withdraw $5300, cash. The victim is told to explain to the teller the money is for “collateral.” The fake deputy (criminal) stays on the phone and directs the victim to take the cash to Jewel or other location of a Coinstar machine. If the victim is successful with the transaction, the cash will purchase crypto-currency for the criminal.

‼️ There have been several reports in the last week or two. Fortunately, the losses have been minimal. It is not unusual for criminals to continue to call the same victims with new scams, even if they were unsuccessful the first time. They only need to be successful once to get your money.
