A new phone scam was reported to the Sheriff’s Office today.

The caller claimed to be Lt. Smith from the sheriff’s office and told our complainant they had missed jury duty. They also said the complainant needed to pay an amount of money over the phone to avoid being arrested. The caller then reportedly put Sheriff Barker on the phone with the complainant to emphasize the need to pay the money.
This call was not made by anyone with the sheriff’s office. We will never call and request payment in lieu of arrest. If you receive a similar call, please hang up and call your local law enforcement agency.
