Help reduce the risk of overheating and fire by practicing safe charging habits:

* Use the correct, manufacturer-approved charger.
* Replace damaged, cracked or frayed cords.
* Charge devices on a hard, flat surface—not beds, couches or pillows.
* Avoid overloading outlets and power strips.
* Keep batteries and chargers away from extreme heat and flammable materials.
* Don’t leave devices charging unattended for long periods, especially overnight.

If a battery becomes unusually hot, swollen, changes shape, leaks or gives off an unusual odor, stop using it.

Take time this week to create and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household.

A few important tips:

* Know two ways out of every room when possible.
* Make sure windows and doors open easily and exits are clear.
* Choose a safe meeting place outside where everyone will gather.
* Teach children how to escape and what to do if a smoke alarm sounds.
* Practice your escape plan so everyone knows exactly what to do.
* Check your smoke alarms and replace batteries when needed.
