There is a lot to unpack with this nightmare…and it isn’t pretty.
A lot of elderly people on Medicare and Medicaid are going to get hit with extra costs they cannot afford.
From an insider’s perspective: Work requirements don’t work to curb fraud, waste, and abuse. Because the vast majority of fraud, waste, and abuse comes from the providers billing services not rendered…not from individuals getting coverage they don’t qualify for.
The opposite is actually true. A majority of people who legitimately qualify for Medicaid coverage will be kicked off due to paperwork and bearucratic hurdles thrown at the poor and elderly. Requiring them to essentially re-qualify for their coverage monthly. The true intention of work requirements are to get people lost in the paperwork, not to “Protect Medicaid.”
No matter how much they try to spin it as a positive.
The template for their vision of Medicaid is the Georgia “Pathways to Coverage”, which has been a total failure. And has only re-enrolled a few thousand of the 284,000 eligible Georgians, due to administrative hurdles, and elderly people not being able to digitally upload required forms. By all accounts, it has been described as a “complete failure” to efficiently provide needed health services to those that qualify.
This is the model Congress has chosen for the nation.
The Center for American Progress and The Arc break down the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, exposing how its deep cuts to Medicaid and Medicare will lead to benefit losses, increased paperwork requirements, and rural hospital closures that will hurt Americans—especially people with disabilities.
