Looking for something to do around Cleveland this weekend?

The Cleveland Apple Festival is happening downtown Saturday and Sunday.

There’ll be arts and crafts, food, entertainment and plenty of things for the kids.

Saturday is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday is 1 to 6 p.m.

I’ve always liked that we have events like this right here at home.

And I’m certainly not opposed to finding a good apple dessert. 😂

Anybody planning to go?

I’ve always enjoyed cooking BBQ.

And I’ve found that sometimes the sauce makes just as much difference as what comes off the smoker.

Here’s a mustard sauce I like:

½ cup yellow mustard
¼ cup c***r vinegar
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon white pepper
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon black pepper

Mix everything together and adjust it to your taste.

I’m curious. Are you a mustard sauce person, vinegar sauce person, or traditional sweet BBQ sauce person?

Well, this wasn’t on the schedule. 😂

Nothing like walking outside and discovering you’ve got a flat tire.

I had other plans for the day, but apparently my tire did too.

At least it gave me an excuse to practice changing one.

Here’s another simple way to use AI.

Tell it what ingredients you already have in your kitchen and ask it to suggest three meals you can make without going to the grocery store.

You can even tell it what you don’t like to eat.

It’s not going to cook dinner for you, unfortunately.

But it might save you another trip to Walmart. 😂

When we were kids growing up in Cleveland, a group of us practically lived in a creek in our neighborhood.

We called ourselves the Annandale Gang.

We caught crawdads, built dams and forts, and even made ourselves a flag out of an old pillowcase.

The creek ran through the middle of an elderly neighbor’s property. Looking back, she had every reason to tell us to stay out of there but she didn’t.

She let a bunch of kids be kids and I didn’t appreciate how much freedom she gave us until years later.

Anybody else have a place like that growing up?

If you’re looking for something simple to do this weekend, here’s one I wouldn’t have thought of:

Muscadine and scuppernong picking is still going on at Morris Vineyard in Charleston.

Fall around here doesn’t last nearly long enough, so I’m becoming a fan of finding an excuse to get outside while we’ve got it.

And picking something you can eat seems like a perfectly reasonable excuse. 😂

If you’ve got a favorite fall thing to do within an hour of Cleveland, I’d like to hear it. I’m always looking for something I haven’t tried.

It’s funny how a picture can bring back things you haven’t thought about in years.

Not just where you were or what you were doing, but who you were at the time and what you thought life was going to look like.

There are definitely a few things I’d tell this guy if I could.

Then again, I’m not sure he would’ve listened. 😂

Probably better that he had to figure some of it out himself.

I grew up in Cleveland playing Boys Club and YMCA sports year-round with kids from just about every different background you could imagine.

We didn’t think much about it at the time. We were just kids on the same team.

Some of those friendships followed us into high school, adulthood, work and even military service.

The older I get, the more I appreciate what a gift it was to grow up in a community where so many of the people around you eventually become part of your story.

Cleveland has changed a lot since then, but that part of home still means something to me.
