Labor Day exists because people fought for the idea that work should have limits.

Small business owners are often the last to get that. You give the day off, then spend it catching up on the things there's never time for otherwise.

If you can actually take it this year, take it. The books will still be there Tuesday, and they'll be easier to face rested.

The P&L tells you whether you earned more than you spent over a stretch of time. The balance sheet tells you what you own, what you owe, and what's genuinely yours at a single moment. Cash flow tells you where the money actually went, which is almost never where you assumed.

A business can be profitable on the P&L and unable to make payroll. That gap shows up in the other two.

Revenue is the number everyone asks about at networking events. It's rarely the one that determines whether the year worked.

Discounting to win the job fills the calendar and empties the margin. Hiring ahead of the numbers means payroll arrives whether the work does or not. And measuring only the top line means you can have your best revenue year and your worst cash year simultaneously — which happens more often than anyone admits.

Growth is good. Growth you can't fund is just a faster way to run into a wall.

If you've been tracking contractor payments against $600, that number is out of date for this year.

For payments made on or after January 1, 2026, the 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC reporting threshold is $2,000 per payee. The old $600 figure still applies to 2025 payments, so this filing season and next follow different rules.

One thing that has not changed: the income is taxable either way. A contractor you paid $1,500 this year still reports it, and you still want the W-9 and the records. Fewer forms is not the same as less bookkeeping.

Most owners price by looking at what it costs them, adding something that feels fair, and hoping the year works out.

A price has to do three things in order. Cover what it actually costs to deliver — including the parts you forget, like your software and your time. Pay you a real wage for the work you personally do. And leave profit on top, because profit is what funds equipment, slow months, and the eventual version of this business that doesn't need you in it daily.

If a price only does the first job, you've built yourself a demanding job rather than a business.

Most people can handle owing money. What they can't handle is not seeing it coming.

A number you've been watching all year is just a number — you planned for it, you set aside for it, you knew. The same number arriving unannounced in April is a crisis, because now it's competing with payroll and rent and whatever else that month already had.

Everyone hits the same dates. What differs is what those days feel like.

One version: finding out what you owe, digging for records that could be anywhere, and paying a number you don't fully understand. The other: knowing roughly where you'd land weeks earlier, handing over what's already organized, and understanding how the figure got there.

Same deadline. Same business, sometimes. The difference is what happened in the months before.

There are four months left in the year, which means most of what determines your tax bill hasn't happened yet.

That's a much better position than it sounds. Income timing, equipment purchases, retirement contributions, how you're paying yourself — those are all live decisions right now. By January, they're history.

The businesses that get good outcomes aren't the ones with clever accountants in April. They're the ones who looked in September.
