October 15 is more than a tax deadline. It's a last chance. ⏰

If you filed an extension, today is when 2025 returns are due. Business owners on extension can also still set up and fund a 2025 SEP-IRA, up to $70,000, and potentially lower last year's tax bill.

Also today: βœ… Remove any excess 2025 IRA contributions to avoid a 6% penalty βœ… Medicare Open Enrollment opens (through Dec 7)

It's official: Social Security benefits will rise 3.6% in 2027. πŸ“¬

For the average retired worker ($2,083/month), that's about $75 more per month.

But the raise isn't the whole story πŸ‘‡ Medicare Part B premiums are announced separately and are usually deducted straight from your check. A bigger premium can absorb part of the raise.

Waiting until age 70 for Social Security is NOT a compounding 8% return.

If you have $500k+ saved, delaying benefits can accidentally trigger:

β€’ A massive portfolio drain during an 8-year waiting gap
β€’ Stealth Medicare premium surcharges (IRMAA)
β€’ An RMD tax bomb waiting for you at age 75

In our latest video, Carl breaks down the 3 hidden traps of the "wait until 70" rule and how to determine your real break-even claiming age.

Bonds are paying what they paid in 2002. πŸ‘€

The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.28% on Oct 6. Inflation was 3.4% in August. That's roughly 1.9 points of return above inflation, something savers haven't seen in a long time.

Higher yields change the math on: πŸ’΅ Cash sitting in low-rate accounts πŸͺœ Bond ladders and locking in yields 🏠 Paying down debt vs. investing

Stocks just hit a record high. So did the cost of borrowing. πŸ“ˆπŸ¦

That doesn't happen often. Here's where things stand going into the week:

β€’ S&P 500: 7,819, an all-time high (Oct 6)
β€’ 10-year Treasury: 5.28%, near its highest level since 2002
β€’ Fed funds: 3.75–4.00%, after the first hike since 2023
β€’ 30-year mortgage: 7.28%

On deck: September inflation and the 2027 Social Security COLA on Wednesday, retail sales Thursday, and big-bank earnings.
