After a storm rolls through, you’ll start seeing contractors knocking on doors. Choosing your contractor is one of the biggest decisions that you need to make. Take your time and choose local!

🚩 Watch for these red flags:

• “Sign this so I can talk to your insurance company”
• “Here’s a list of your neighbors we’ve signed up”
• “You have damage”—before they’ve even inspected your home
• “We’ll waive your deductible” (this is illegal in Minnesota)
• “Your insurance company is terrible—let me handle everything”

You have one year to file a claim and two years to make repairs so there is no need to rush the decision on what contractor you want to work with.

These are classic storm-chasing tactics.

✅ Do yourself a favor: choose a local, licensed contractor with a real presence in your community.

Know your rights in Minnesota:

✔ Contractors must be licensed and insured
✔ Contracts must clearly include:
– Scope of work
– Materials
– Total price (or how it’s determined)
✔ You have 3 business days to cancel after signing

👉 Bottom line: Don’t sign anything on the spot—especially something called an “authorization” or “inspection form.” It can be a binding contract.

If something feels rushed or pressured, trust your gut and walk away.

First, understand what to look for to determine if you may have damage.

Third, and most important, if repairs are needed, do yourself a favor—choose a contractor who’s part of your community.

When it comes to repairs, go local. Local contractors understand building codes, hire local workers, and are invested in the local community. They support local schools, pay local taxes, and will be around long after the job is done. They’re also often more cost-effective than out-of-town crews.

Most importantly, if something needs attention later, a local contractor will stand behind their work. Storm chasers? They’ve already moved on to the next job.

The Claremont Chamber recently heard from the SPARO, the local 988 team, who shared that their services are available to anyone needing mental health or emotional support, not just those experiencing suicidal thoughts or a crisis. Their goal is to help people before situations reach the crisis stage.

They define a “crisis” simply as not feeling like yourself — and encourage people to reach out early. Support is available by phone, video, or even in person.

If you’re interested in helping, they are also hiring support staff and accept financial donations. If you can’t help in either of those ways you can help by simply sharing this post — it can make a real difference for someone who needs it.
