CLANTON, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We’re taking a little trip down memory lane, and we need some of our longtime Clanton residents to help us out!

We have heard that the building that is now home to Alabama Medicare Resource Center was once Driver’s BBQ?

Here’s another interesting piece of local history. Clay Carroll, who went on to become a Major League Baseball pitcher, worked at Driver’s BBQ as a young man! That is the only information I can find on Drivers BBQ.

This would have probably been around the 50s. We’d LOVE to hear from anyone who remembers this place!

We’d love to collect some stories and photos to help preserve a little piece of Clanton’s history.

Medicare has a special talent for making perfectly normal things sound mildly terrifying. 🤣 Especially this time of year.

You open your mail and see “Notice of Change.” You hear your plan is changing for next year. You notice your prescription cost looks different. Or you hear someone say, “My plan is WAY better than yours.”

And suddenly it feels like you should be worried.

But here’s what I want you to know:

Different doesn’t automatically mean bad. And a change doesn’t automatically mean you need to switch plans. Your Annual Notice of Change tells you what’s changing with your current Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the coming year.

The next step is figuring out whether any of those changes actually matter for you.

Your prescriptions.

Your doctors and specialists.

Your preferred pharmacy.

Your costs.

Even things like where you spend your time or how often you travel.

That’s why I’d rather you bring me the thing that looks scary than sit at home worrying about what it might mean.

Sometimes there’s something we need to look at.

And sometimes you just need someone to say, “Here’s what that actually means.”

If something in your Medicare mail has you concerned, bring it with you to your review. We’ll look at it together.

We’ve got a new face around the office!

We’re excited to officially welcome Jordan Owens to the Alabama Medicare Resource Center as our new Office & Community Outreach Coordinator.

Jordan is originally from Phenix City and has recently made Clanton her new home. Before joining our team, she worked as a Clinical Assistant, where she learned firsthand just how important genuine client care can be. That experience, along with her outgoing personality and love for connecting with people, made her a great fit for what we’re building here.

Around the office, Jordan will help keep things running smoothly, care for the people who walk through our doors, and help ALMRC become even more involved throughout the community.

We’re incredibly excited about the growth happening at ALMRC and even more excited about the people we’re bringing along for the journey. We believe Jordan is going to be a great part of that growth, and we’re looking forward to an impactful future serving our clients and this community well.

Same plan. Different year.

And those two things don't always mean same coverage.

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans can make changes from one year to the next, including costs, benefits, drug coverage, pharmacy networks and provider networks.

That's why "I like the plan I have" isn't where I stop during a review.

The better question is: Will I still like it next year?

A few minutes spent looking at what's changing can save you from surprises later.

Before you switch cell phone carriers, smart move is to check their coverage map first, make sure they actually work well where you live, where you work, where you spend most of your time. Otherwise you switch, save a little money, and end up with dropped calls in your own kitchen.

Medicare just gave you a similar kind of check.

The Medicare Plan Finder tool got a real upgrade. Now, before you switch plans, you can actually check whether your current doctors are in that plan's network. No more guessing, no more finding out after you've already switched that your doctor isn't covered.

Most people assume Medicare drug price negotiations are something that already happened and are done. They're actually not finished. They're still expanding.

CMS has already released draft guidance for the next round of negotiations, the one that'll shape prices for 2028. This is the ongoing program where Medicare negotiates directly with drug manufacturers on the cost of certain high-priced medications, and it keeps adding more drugs to the list over time.

Most beneficiaries never hear about this stage. It happens quietly, years before it actually shows up in your plan's pricing. But it's worth knowing it's happening, because it means this program isn't a one-time thing. It's an ongoing process that keeps building.

I'll keep an eye on this one and let you know as it develops.

For the past couple of years, there's been a quiet safety net under Medicare drug plan prices. A government program helped keep premiums from swinging too wildly while a bunch of other changes rolled out across Medicare at the same time. Most people never knew it was there, because it just did its job in the background.

That safety net is gone now.

Insurance companies are setting drug plan prices completely on their own this year, without that extra support. CMS says insurers have had enough time to get comfortable pricing without it, so it's being phased out.

Nobody knows yet exactly how this shakes out for every single plan. Some might barely move. Others might jump more than people expect. That's exactly why this is a good year to actually look at your number instead of assuming it'll land close to last year's.
