How the Scam Typically Works
1. Initial Contact
-You receive a call, text, or voicemail claiming there is a suspicious purchase (usually an electronic device).
-The amount is usually large enough to create anxiety, such as $1,200 or more.
2. Creating Urgency
-The caller says the charge is pending and must be stopped immediately.
-They may ask you to "press 1" or stay on the line to prevent the transaction from posting.
3. Fake Transfer
-The "representative" or "credit card fraud specialist" transfers you to a supposed bank fraud investigator.
-The transfer sounds convincing because the second person already knows the details of the alleged transaction. That is because they are working together.
4. Account Takeover Attempt
The fake bank representative asks for:
Online banking credentials
Debit card numbers
One-time passcodes (OTP)
Security questions
Card verification codes
Some scams convince victims to move money to a "safe account," which is actually controlled by the criminals.
5. Caller ID Spoofing
The incoming number may appear to be your bank's real fraud department or even the number printed on the back of your card.
