ERCOT: 'Expect rotating outages of power due to high demand from freezing temperatures'

The nonprofit organization that operates Texas’ power grid warned Sunday that it may be forced to impose rolling outages in the state on Monday and Tuesday as a major winter storm brings record low temperatures and causes massive demand for electricity.

02/14/2021

Rotating outages could be possible due to extreme cold weather throughout the state over the next few days. The Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is predicting record-breaking winter electricity demand that may cause tight grid conditions. If any electricity generating units trip offline, grid conditions could get tight enough to require rotating outages. Taylor Electric Cooperative encourages members to reduce energy consumption when possible to avoid causing stress on the electric grid.

• Turn your thermostat down 2-3 degrees in colder weather. Energy.gov recommends 68 degrees.
• Open blinds and curtains to provide warmth from sunlight during the day.
• Turn off non-essential lights and appliances.
• Use larger appliances such as your washer/dryer and oven as little as possible.

Rotating outages are a last resort measure to protect the grid. If ERCOT calls on utilities to implement these outages, Taylor Electric Cooperative MUST comply. More importantly, they could help prevent a larger and much longer statewide blackout.

We encourage our members to take the necessary precautions and plan ahead to be ready in the event outages do occur.

This situation is not immediately imminent, but is a possibility we want everyone to be prepared for over the next few days. We’ll try to give advance notice on Facebook as much as possible.

02/13/2021

Just a reminder if your unit is an electric unit to set it to emergency heat. Here in Texas not all our plumbing is designed for this much cold weather. Make sure you’re leaving a little drop/stream out of your faucets and/or filling your tub full of water just incase pipes freeze. Also, make sure your phones are staying charged in case you lose electricity. We pray you all stay safe and warm during these crazy weather days!

02/12/2021

Due to the inclement weather headed our way over the next several days, our office will be closed Monday, February 15th. We will reopen Tuesday, February 16th at 8:30am. We hope you all stay safe and warm!
