The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates 25 bps. Now to see if Mr. Warsh, in his press conference, gives any inkling of what may lie ahead.

Wall Street was overwhelmingly expecting the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates for the first time in more than three years.

As we recently paused to remember September 11, I found myself thinking about something I had read recently about “inner wealth.”

It made me think about how we measure wealth.

We often talk about wealth in numbers—what's in an investment account, the value of a home, or how much we've accumulated over the years.

But there is another kind of wealth that doesn't show up on a statement.

It is the people we love.
The memories we've made.
The time we have with family.
The ability to help someone when they need it.
The freedom to say yes to the things that matter—and sometimes the freedom to slow down and simply be present.

Moments of remembrance have a way of putting those things into perspective.

Financial planning, at its best, isn't really about accumulating a number just for the sake of having a number.

It's about asking:

What do you want your money to make possible in your life?

Maybe it's retirement with less worry.
Maybe it's helping your children or grandchildren.
Maybe it's taking the trip you've always talked about.
Maybe it's giving to a cause that matters to you.
Or maybe it's simply having the freedom to spend more time with the people you love.

Those things are part of your wealth, too.

And perhaps that's what “inner wealth” really reminds us of: money is a tool, but the life it helps us live is the real measure of its value.

Today, I'm grateful for the reminder to keep perspective—and to never lose sight of what we're really planning for.
