Ever wonder why so many old American barns are painted red?

It wasn't because red was trendy—it was because farmers were resourceful.

Years ago, farmers often made their own paint by mixing lime (which helped protect the wood) with iron oxide (rust), which was inexpensive, plentiful, and gave the paint its distinctive red color. The mixture also helped preserve the wood and deter mold and mildew.

It's a great reminder that some of America's most iconic homes, barns, and farms were built with hard work, ingenuity, and making the most of what you had.

I love learning little pieces of homeownership history like this. Whether it's a century-old farmhouse or a brand-new home, every property has a story.
