If you're married and your husband dies first, what happens when two Social Security checks become one?
Let’s say your husband receives $3,500 a month from Social Security and you receive $3,000. That’s $6,500 coming into your household each month.
If your husband passes away first, you may be eligible for his higher Social Security benefit as his surviving spouse. But you don’t continue receiving both checks. In this example, $6,500 becomes $3,500.
Did your monthly expenses just drop by $3,000 too?
Probably not. You may still be living in the same house with many of the same bills. The difference may have to come from your investments, and that can change how long your savings need to last.
If you’re planning retirement as a couple, it’s worth asking: Does our retirement still work if I’m the one who lives the longest?
Because at some point, two Social Security checks may become one. Text me at 513-434-1930 to review your retirement.
