Are you treating your personal insurance like a strategy…. or a Panic button?

That 1-800 number on the back of your auto or home policy? It’s not an automatic claim button for every ding, drip, or “slight inconvenience.”

Filing a claim the second something happens can feel like relief—until your renewal hits. One small claim can spike your premiums, trigger a non-renewal, or even make you “uninsurable” with your current carrier.

This is personal lines insurance—your car, your home, your peace of mind. The real purpose? Protecting you from the catastrophic, not reimbursing every minor hassle.

Here’s how to think (and act) like a strategist:

Know your deductibles– Comfortable paying the first $500 or $1,000 out of pocket? That’s often smarter than a claim.

Understand the ripple effect– A small fender-bender claim today could cost you hundreds, if not thousands, in higher premiums over the next 3–5 years.

Maintain proactively– Regular roof inspections, tree trimming, driveway sealing, pipe cleaning, or installing new brakes, rotating or buying new tires aren’t just “nice-to-haves”—they prevent claims before they start.

Had an introductory meeting today with a prospective client, and amidst our conversation, following a quick glance at their current declaration pages, I discovered that their current policy didn’t include one of their sons - a youthful driver.

This is a vital reminder of the importance of regular policy reviews, as this is not the first time I’ve seen such occurrence this month alone!
