What makes a business truly ready for its next chapter?

Our own Dave Nienaber, MBA, CPA, CFP®, recently joined the Cincinnati Business Courier’s Table of Experts alongside Carol Butler of the Goering Center and Christopher Kuhnhein of Cors & Bassett to discuss successful business transitions and succession planning.

One question Dave posed to business owners gets right to the heart of the conversation: “Do you own a business, or do you own a job?”

A successful transition takes more than preparing the business for a change in ownership. It also means considering the financial, family, and legacy decisions that come with that transition.

Dave brought his own perspective to this important conversation, sharing insights to help business owners think more intentionally about what comes next.

Passing wealth to the next generation takes more than a well-drafted estate plan. It takes communication.

Families can spend a lifetime building wealth, yet the plans for what happens next sometimes remain in documents that younger generations have never discussed. That's why our work with multigenerational families can include bringing family members together, facilitating conversations, and helping ensure everyone understands the intentions behind the plan.

At Foster & Motley, we believe thoughtful wealth transfer should prepare the people involved, not only the assets being transferred.

A legacy built through giving doesn't have to wait for a will.

Thoughtful charitable giving can allow you to support the causes that matter to you while you're here to see the impact. And when giving is considered alongside your broader tax and estate picture, strategies like donor-advised funds, qualified charitable distributions, and intentionally timed gifts can help align your generosity with your overall financial plan.

At Foster & Motley, these aren't conversations we save for the end of the year. We work with clients throughout the year to think intentionally about how, when, and why they give.

Because sometimes the most meaningful part of a legacy is getting to watch it take shape.

Foster & Motley is proud to be recognized among Worth’s 2026 Best Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) firms. This recognition reflects our team’s continued commitment to providing thoughtful, personalized wealth management for the individuals, families, and business owners we’re fortunate to serve.

We’re grateful for the trust our clients place in us and proud of the relationships we’ve built over the years, and are honored to continue helping them live their most meaningful lives.

Worth's Leading Advisor program uses an independent selection process to identify RIA firms that clear a set of stringent benchmarks, including assets under management of over $500 million, a predominantly high-net-worth clientele, a substantial financial planning practice, and independence from broker-dealers. The rankings were developed in collaboration with Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), a proxy advisory firm, and are based on data firms submit to the SEC through their ADV filings. Foster & Motley has no influence on Worth's criteria or ranking process and paid no fees to be included.

What does it really mean to leave a legacy?

For many families, it begins long before wealth is ever transferred. It can mean having conversations about your intentions, creating a charitable giving strategy that reflects your values, or simply choosing to show up for the people and communities that matter to you.

In this month's Beyond the Headlines newsletter, Zach Horn explores the role thoughtful planning and open communication can play in turning your intentions into something the next generation can understand and carry forward. We also share how the Foster & Motley team has been putting those same values into action through volunteer work across Greater Cincinnati this summer.

Because your legacy isn't only about what you leave behind. It's also about what you choose to build today.

If your annual review only focuses on investment returns, you're probably missing some of the most important conversations.

A comprehensive review should revisit your financial goals, retirement projections, tax strategies, estate planning documents, cash flow needs, charitable giving, insurance coverage, and any major life changes that could affect your long-term plan. Markets matter, but they're only one part of your financial life.

At Foster & Motley, regular reviews are an opportunity to make thoughtful adjustments before circumstances force them. We believe financial planning works best when it's proactive, collaborative, and flexible enough to evolve as your life changes.

The goal isn't simply to measure performance, but to help ensure your financial plan continues to help you live your most meaningful life.
