To attract and retain skilled workers, your small business needs to offer more than competitive pay. Your benefits package matters, too.

Tax-free fringe benefits may be especially valuable to employees. Examples include many types of insurance (health, disability, long-term care and life), assistance plans (dependent care, adoption and educational) and transportation benefits, subject to certain limits. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act also changed some fringe-benefit tax rules for 2026 and beyond.

Open enrollment is right around the corner for many businesses. As you review your 2027 benefits package, contact us for help evaluating your current offerings and fine-tuning them as needed.

If your child is heading to college this fall, tax breaks may be available. For example, you might be eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) of up to $2,500 per student for the first four years of college. But the AOTC is phased out for married joint filers with modified adjusted gross income between $160,000 and $180,000 (between $80,000 and $90,000 for heads of households).

If your child has a tax-advantaged education account, such as a 529 plan, tax-free withdrawals can be taken to pay qualified expenses. But expenses paid with tax-free withdrawals can’t be used to claim the AOTC.

IRS or state tax problems don’t have to derail your business. Many issues can be resolved when they’re addressed promptly and strategically.

If you or your business receives a tax notice from the IRS or a state agency, don’t ignore it. Be mindful of the notice’s deadline and work with your tax advisor to prepare supporting documentation and an appropriate response. If you owe back taxes that you can’t pay in full, explore potential relief options, such as a temporary delay in collection due to hardship, an installment agreement or payment plan, or a settlement plan.

We can help you communicate with tax authorities and create a plan to get your business back on track. Contact us to learn more.

Are you thinking about selling your commercial or investment real estate? If the property has appreciated significantly, a Sec. 1031 like-kind exchange may allow you to defer tax on some or all of the gain. With this transaction, you exchange the property for another qualifying property, generally deferring tax until the replacement property is sold.

But common misconceptions about Sec. 1031 exchanges can lead to missed opportunities or costly mistakes. For example, the property types don’t have to be identical, and receiving cash or debt relief (“boot”) may trigger taxable gain.

We can help demystify this tax strategy and determine whether it’s right for your situation. Contact us to learn more.

C corporation shareholders usually owe tax on gains from selling stock. But qualified small business (QSB) stock sales may qualify for a special gain exclusion. To be eligible for this break, certain requirements must be met.

QSB stock acquired after Sept. 27, 2010, may be eligible for a 100% gain exclusion if it’s held for at least five years. Under recent tax law changes, QSB stock acquired after July 4, 2025, may be eligible for a partial gain exclusion if it’s held for at least three years.

If you’re planning to sell your business, expect buyers to closely review your financial statements, operations and legal agreements. Conducting your own due diligence now can smooth the buyer review process and ease deal negotiations. The primary goal of presale due diligence is to evaluate the quality and sustainability of earnings, identify potential risks, and normalize financial results before giving prospective buyers access to your business’s statements. It’s also important to review employee and customer contracts, assess tax and regulatory compliance, and confirm ownership of intellectual property. Contact us to learn more.

Personal interest expense generally can’t be deducted for federal tax purposes. But there are exceptions. You probably know that home mortgage interest may be deductible if you itemize deductions rather than claiming the standard deduction. New for 2025 through 2028, you may be eligible to deduct up to $10,000 of car loan interest if the vehicle’s “final assembly” was in the U.S. and other requirements are met. But the deduction phases out starting at $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($200,000 for married couples filing jointly). Other potential interest expense deductions are student loan interest and investment interest. Contact us with any questions.

One big decision to make when filing your individual income tax return is whether to claim the standard deduction or itemize. Itemizing saves tax if total itemized deductions are larger than the standard deduction. If you paid more than $10,000 in state and local taxes (SALT) last year, you might save tax by itemizing on your 2025 return even if claiming the standard deduction has saved you more tax in recent years. This is because of a tax law change that increased the SALT deduction limit to $40,000 for 2025 ($20,000 for married couples filing separately). But an income-based limit could reduce your SALT deduction. We can assess the impact of the SALT limit change on your tax situation.
