VA is raising its minimum liability limits for auto insurance! Currently the required limits are 25/50/20, effective Jan 1 the new limits required are 30/60/20. This might sound like a big deal to some, but it’s truly not meant to hurt or burden anyone. The cost difference for your insurance policy will barely be impacted. It’s really to protect you. The minimum limits really don’t cover much. Example- you have a policy with the current limits at 25k liability per person/50k per accident/ 20k property damage. You are involved in an accident. Let’s say it’s your fault and you total 2 vehicles. Your current policy only carry’s a limit for 20k in property damage. Have you seen the cost of vehicles lately? 20k will not go far when buying one new car, let alone the two that you’re now responsible for. What does that mean for you? That means the other $$ you are responsible for out of your pocket. They can garnish your wages, put a lien on your home etc.
When I write a new insurance policy I ALWAYS write at a higher limit of 100/300/100 in an effort to ease the burdens for my clients. I try to make sure you’re covered adequately. Please take the time in the next few weeks to review your insurance coverage.
