Did You Know: The holiday now known as Juneteenth—a portmanteau of June and nineteenth—originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865, marking the freeing of slaves in Texas nearly two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery. The day became a national holiday in 2021 and marks an opportunity to continue working toward progress, freedom and peace for all.
