DMDII is one of 14 advanced-manufacturing institutes created during President Barack Obama’s first term, as the nation was still grinding its way out of the recession.
DMDII, which was overseen by the U.S. Army, has committed $90 million to more than 60 research projects, ranging from using artificial-intelligence tools to improve welding in factories to digitizing the process of making computer circuit boards from design through manufacturing.

Five years after launching the Goose Island lab, the Defense Department plans to provide new funding that could reach $60 million.
