ABOC is proud to celebrate PRIDE Month by spotlighting Louis Hutchins, Lockbox Bail Bond Operator and accomplished artist. Louis has been volunteering at Equality Illinois, Chicago House, Center on Halsted, and Windy City Times for over 20 years. When asked why he volunteers, Louis shared “I always wanted to acknowledge who I am. I am proud to be who I am.” Louis also added “I enjoy volunteering at Center on Halsted the most because I can work with kids. I want them to love themselves, be themselves, and to motivate them to express themselves through music and art.” The balloon artwork is one of Louis’s original pieces. If you attend the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, Louis will be on the Equality Illinois float.

Happy PRIDE, everyone!

Last week, members of ABOC's Corporate Trust Team enjoyed attending Women in Public Finance’s Chicago Annual Conference and celebrating the accomplishments of clients, peers, and women who are making a difference in the industry. It was a great opportunity to network and to share knowledge and expertise together. Michele Martello said “I really enjoyed the conference and seeing my various friends and customers in the industry. It was one of the better conferences that I have been to and I found it really informative.” Donna Howard added “I thought the conference was great and I especially enjoyed the keynote speakers and the panel discussions.” Cecilia Vargas also shared “This was easily one of the most fun conferences I’ve been to. This is my 3rd or 4th. The panel discussions were energizing & interesting to listen to. I saw people I have met before; I met new people and people who I correspond with via email. It was nice to finally put a face to the name.” Stacy Coleman also said “I think this was one of the better conferences that I have attended. The speakers and panel discussions were insightful and reconnecting with familiar faces was refreshing.”

Congratulations to the keynote speakers and to Women in Public Finance Chicago Chapter on a great event.

Last week ABOC employees enjoyed a range of treats -- including guava pastries, strawberry croissants, and even hot dogs! -- from Tous Les Jours USA in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Month. Chynise Cunningham (Senior Vice President, Human Resources) said “Asia has diverse cuisines throughout the continent, and it extends to the desserts as well. When talking to people, I learned that many have never been to Chicago's Chinatown or other Asian neighborhoods in Chicago such as Uptown or Argyle. I encourage everyone to check them out! It's always great to explore our city and the amazing diverse neighborhoods!”

ABOC is grateful to have the opportunity to highlight a valued Union partner in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Don Villar serves as Secretary for the Chicago Federation of Labor and exemplifies the meaning of allyship between the Bank and our Union clients. We work side by side to help our communities while also raising awareness about important topics, such as the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

On the topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Don said “That’s what it’s all about, celebrating the rich diversity of our country, and in this month especially, the contributions of Asian Americans. Diversity is something to be proud of and AANHPI Heritage Month reminds us of this.”

The official theme this year is “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together.” This theme has significant meaning to Don, and he shared, “Racial solidarity is so important – we need it more than ever. This is 2026! From a labor union perspective, we need to recognize the culture behind movements, whether it’s Filipino Americans fighting for workers rights or Alaskan/Native Hawaiians - I think about the contributions of Asian Americans for these movements and how it continues today. The fight for racial justice and solidarity has come a long way, and an example of this is from the 1991 Civil Rights Act Amendment, which was in large part due to Filipino Americans fighting for workers’ rights and against racial disparity. This amendment later helped Chicago Firefighters who were facing discriminatory hiring practices.”

Finally, when asked what AANHPI Month means to him, Don reflected “It means a chance to celebrate the diversity and see how far we’ve come, but also recognizing there’s still work that needs to be done. Meaningful ways to celebrate AANHPI culture would be to acknowledge it, take a moment to recognize the rich diversity, and reflect on history. Without the movements and celebration of cultures, we wouldn’t have the the rich diversity in the workforce that we have today. It’s important to celebrate all the months and to pause to recognize these, because it wasn’t always like this. We’re becoming more diversified and ending discriminatory practices, and we need to continue to strive for this and not roll back. Let’s celebrate our siblings, our neighbors, and know that it’s vital to celebrate these months to help create a more encompassing and welcoming city and workplace.”
