Our final Hometown Hero we would like to recognize is Ed “Duffy” Gardner. Ed is a proud Navy Veteran who served as a Commissaryman 3rd Class during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. During his service, Ed’s mission was to make sure his fellow servicemen were properly fed as he was responsible for preparing and serving meals. Fifty years later, he continues to serve those around him. As an active member of the Glenn Maker American Legion Post 1160 in Chicago Ridge, he always looks for ways to give back to his community, including attending local food drives and pantries to gather food for those who need it.

We are honored to recognize Ed for his service, generosity, and continued commitment to helping others. Thank you, Ed, for your service, and thank you to all of our veterans, active military members, and Hometown Heroes who make a difference in our neighborhoods. 🇺🇸

Our next Hometown Hero was able to make his hometown efforts nationwide! Kurt DeGroot is a local firefighter from Oak Forest who through his job was inspired to start Project Fire Buddies. Project Fire Buddies is a nonprofit organization that brings joy to children facing critical illnesses through the help of local fire departments. This organization was initiated in 2016 within the Oak Forest Fire Department. Since then, the organization has gone nationwide with 178 chapters in 15 states! Project Fire Buddies members pay visits to “Fire Buddies” at their homes, often times arriving in a parade of fire trucks with lights and sirens bringing immense amounts of joy to the children. Members also bring presents for holidays and birthdays, offer tickets to special occasions and concerts, and build relationships that continue to support the children overtime. Project Fire Buddies has also helped families in obtaining essential medical equipment and supplies. Thank you to Kurt and everyone supporting the organization as you have set the ultimate example of how contagious simple acts of kindness can be especially for our neighbors that need it most. 🥰
