Established by the Illinois state legislature in 1895, the Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund manages members' assets and administers benefits. The $13.7 billion pension fund serves more than 98,000 members and provides pension and health insurance benefits to more than 27,150 beneficiaries. A majority of CTPF annuitants (83%) live in Illinois and the $1.5 billion in pension paymen

ts they receive generate $2.1 billion in total economic impact for the state.

Happy Birthday, Jane Addams! An activist and social reformer, Jane Addams was elected President of the Fund in 1905 and immediately set about to reform pension laws to ensure sustainable for all members. In 1907, two bills were passed that set the course for the future: one bill reorganized benefits and granted teachers an elected Board of Trustees, and the second allowed the Board of Education to make contributions to CTPF from interest accumulated on education funds. This was the first time funding for pensions would come from sources other than teachers.
