Throughout the years, GATX has proudly created custom designs for our railcars that feature charity partners and initiatives to raise awareness for important causes. Did you know that these designs are typically printed and then “wrapped” on the railcar rather than painted? Most recently, we commissioned a special boxcar wrap for the Save the Monarch Butterfly 60,000 Tree Challenge—GATX's collaboration with Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, North American Strategy for Competitiveness, and Rotary clubs throughout North America—and created a time-lapse video to show how it’s done.
It took multiple days for the team to wrap the boxcar at our Hearne, Texas facility, and despite the record heat, the results were amazing! We hope the beautiful design will help spread awareness of the plight of the endangered monarch butterfly as the boxcar travels throughout North America, mirroring the monarch’s migration pattern. The design also includes a crowd-funding QR code so anyone who sees the boxcar “in the wild” can learn more about and donate to the cause.
The initiative will include multiple events throughout North America beginning in Windsor, Ontario next month and culminating in the El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico in October. The goal of this initiative is to raise funds to plant oyamel trees in the sanctuary to help reestablish the monarch population.
