GATX is committed to the safety of our communities. To that end, we recently donated two general purpose tank cars to North County Regional Fire’s new, state-of-the-art training facility in Stanwood, WA. In addition to providing the tank cars, GATX assisted with logistics to ensure they made it to the facility safely.

As the only fire training center of its kind in Northwest Washington, not only will firefighters in North County benefit from the addition of these tank cars to their training program, but neighboring agencies and community colleges will also have the opportunity to utilize the training resources.

The two tank cars will hold a total of 62,000 gallons of water, which will be used in conjunction with a pump system to provide variable water pressures to eight fire hydrants installed in a closed-loop system within the training facility. This will enable live-fire training scenarios, providing an unparalleled training experience that simulates real-life situations. The goal is to better train over 9,000 firefighters in the region and provide real-life experience in a controlled environment to help them proactively prevent and minimize injuries in the line of duty.

GATX is honored to play a small role in helping provide fire department personnel with training and preparedness to keep their communities safe.

Participants had a great time playing for gift cards to local Hispanic- and Latin-owned businesses, listening to Latin music, and enjoying Venezuelan food!

the Save the Monarch Butterfly 60,000 Tree Challenge—GATX's collaboration with Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, North American Strategy for Competitiveness, and Rotary clubs throughout North America—has a goal to promote monarch butterfly conservation and awareness.

As a key component of the awareness campaign, the monarch butterfly boxcar rolled through Chicago last week as it travels the route of the annual monarch migration.

We were privileged to have representatives from Rotary and Kansas City Southern visit the GATX office and educate employees about the importance of monarch conservation. Our CEO, Robert Lyons, also spoke about the making of the custom boxcar at a public education event.

Throughout the years, GATX has proudly created custom designs for our railcars that feature charity partners and initiatives to raise awareness for important causes. Did you know that these designs are typically printed and then “wrapped” on the railcar rather than painted? Most recently, we commissioned a special boxcar wrap for the Save the Monarch Butterfly 60,000 Tree Challenge—GATX's collaboration with Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, North American Strategy for Competitiveness, and Rotary clubs throughout North America—and created a time-lapse video to show how it’s done.

It took multiple days for the team to wrap the boxcar at our Hearne, Texas facility, and despite the record heat, the results were amazing! We hope the beautiful design will help spread awareness of the plight of the endangered monarch butterfly as the boxcar travels throughout North America, mirroring the monarch’s migration pattern. The design also includes a crowd-funding QR code so anyone who sees the boxcar “in the wild” can learn more about and donate to the cause.

The initiative will include multiple events throughout North America beginning in Windsor, Ontario next month and culminating in the El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico in October. The goal of this initiative is to raise funds to plant oyamel trees in the sanctuary to help reestablish the monarch population.
