Yes Boston, it's that time of year again: grab a pair of gloves and clear out the back of your SUV and get ready to cruise the various neighborhoods of the city to treasure hunt for free stuff to decorate your home...it's ALLSTON CHRISTMAS TIME!!!
From now through Labor Day evening the streets and sidewalks of Boston (and Brookline, Cambridge, and Newton) will be filled with moving vans as recent college grads, incoming college students and young professionals moving to the city to start their new jobs will all be either moving out of their current apartments as their leases expire or into their new places to start their new leases this weekend. Whatever they can't pack into their cars or moving vans (or just stuff they want to get rid of) will be left on the sidewalk, just waiting to be discovered and claimed by area bargain hunters, like you, this weekend.
Back in my younger years my roommate at the time and I furnished our first apartment in the city with fantastic finds from the sidewalks of the North End during Allston Christmas weekend. With our limited finances, it truly did feel like Christmas as we roamed the sidewalks hunting for furnishings and home decor items that appeared to be in decent shape, looked relatively clean, and, most importantly, were light enough for us to haul up the stairs to our 3rd floor walkup apartment. Side tables, a coffee table, a fan, bookcases, lamps, barstools, a wicker chair, a TV stand, a couple of folding chairs, picture frames - we scored some excellent stuff that night!
Several of the items that people leave on the sidewalks during Allston Christmas are usually in decent enough shape for you to grab it for free and use in your place until you can afford to buy a newer, better replacement later. Best to avoid mattresses and upholstered furniture due to potential bedbug scenarios, gross. Bring your sense of adventure and some Clorox wipes, to give your treasures a quick wipedown before loading them into your car. Happy hunting, everyone!
Tis the season to find a used air conditioner or semi-damaged bed frame on the streets of Allston.
