Mid year update for all of my tax clients. We're upgrading our forms and policies for the next year. Streamlining is important and change is healthy.

Tips:

Tally your monthly receipts.

Put more away in your 401k and investments

Check your W4s at work to make sure that you are withholding the correct amount of taxes

Remember that the IRS gets the same forms that you do from your employers. They know if you're telling an untruth.

See y'all in 5 months!!

So let me put on my professional tax preparer hat for the first time in 2023.

As a licensed professional for over 34 years, I'm asked the same questions every year so I figured I'd post it first before my phone starts ringing.

1. W2s must be in your hands by Jan 31st. If you've moved and failed to provide your new address to your employers, you still have time. Reach out to them this week so that they can get it to their payroll administrators.

2. The dates have not yet been announced for the IRS to begin accepting filed returns. Now a received return does not mean a refund. The disclaimer that began popping up about 8 years ago states, "please allow up to 3 weeks for processing of your return".

3. If you owe any of the following - back child support (without a current agreement), monies to the IRS, defaulted student loans, monies to your state government, etc, please deduct these fees from whatever refund you anticipate receiving.

4. Be smart about your money. Too many people pay the big named tax "houses" big money to "prepare" their returns. Did you know that all you're doing is getting a "loan" against your own money that you now have to pay up to 300% interest on? Be patient. Pay a trained professional and wait the allocated amount of time to receive ALL of your money due back.

5. Yes you must file all of your w2s even if it means you may get a smaller refund. The IRS knows everything.

6. The IRS is getting slicker with detecting fraud. If you're 50, your oldest child shouldn't be 45.... get my meaning.

7. And finally, get all that is due to you. It's December 1st. A new year is upon us. Learn how to pay yourself first. Stop loaning the government your money so that they can take their time giving it back to you. Change those W-4s immediately. Claim more deductions so that your paycheck is bigger. And remember that almost EVERYTHING could be a deduction.

I hope that I have helped a few of you out today. I begin taking appointments as soon as the IRS opens up the portal. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments or inbox me. Happy 2023!!!!

Up to my eyeballs in taxes... yes this is my season!!!

Well here we go again!!! It's that time of the year again and the countdown has begun! Let's get ready to rumble!

Key filing season dates
There are several important dates taxpayers should keep in mind for this year's filing season:

January 23: IRS begins 2023 tax season and starts accepting and processing individual 2022 tax returns.
January 27: Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day to raise awareness of valuable tax credits available to many people – including the option to use prior-year income to qualify.
April 18: National due date to file a 2022 tax return or request an extension and pay tax owed due to the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C.
October 16: Due date to file for those requesting an extension on their 2022 tax returns.

It’s that time Again FRIDAY!!!
Filthy RICH Friday 🙌🏼

😳MUST READ⬇️

Spreading this information for those of you that don’t have your affairs in order. Make sure all bank accounts have direct beneficiaries. The beneficiary need only go to the bank with your death certificate and an ID of their own.

- TOD = Transfer On Death deed if you own a home. Completing this document and filing it with your county saves your heirs THOUSANDS. This document allows you to transfer ownership of your home to your designee. All they need to do is take their ID and your death certificate to the county building and the deed is signed over. Doing this will avoid the home having to go through probate.

- Living Will: Allows one to put in writing exactly what you want done in the event you cannot speak for yourself when it comes to healthcare decisions

- Durable Power of Attorney: Allows one to designate a person to make legal decisions if one is no longer competent to do so.

- Power of Attorney for Healthcare: This document allows one to designate someone to make healthcare decisions for their person.

- Last Will and Testament: Designates to whom personal belongings will go too.

- Funeral Planning Declaration: allows one to say exactly one’s wishes as far as disposition of the body and the services.

- If the above documents are done, you can AVOID probate. If all the above is not done, you have to open an estate account at the bank. All money that doesn’t have direct beneficiaries goes into this account. You have to have an attorney to open the estate account. The attorney also has to publicize your passing in the newspaper or post publication at the county courthouse, to allow anyone to make a claim on your property. - It’s a complete PAIN.

- Make a list of all banks and account numbers, all investment institutions with account numbers, lists of credit cards, utility accounts, etc. Leave clear instructions as to how and when these things are paid. Make sure heirs knows where life insurance policies are located.

- Make 100% sure SOMEONE knows your Apple ID, bank ID account logins and passwords!

- Make sure you have titles for all vehicles, campers, etc!

- MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!! - Talk with those closest to you and make all your wishes KNOWN. Talk to those whom you’ve designated, as well as those close to you whom you did not designate. - Do this to explain why your decisions were made and to avoid any lingering questions or hurt feelings.

Hope this helps! Hope this lights a spark to encourage all your friends and family to take care of these things to make it easier for those we all leave behind!

My hope is that the above list at least helps you start an important conversation with your loved ones.

I had the fortune of receiving a new client from word of mouth. He talked up my resume as soon as I got on the phone. Just knowing that someone else is talking good things behind my back put a smile on my face!
