๐Ÿ“‰ The S&P 500 fell nearly 57% during the 2007โ€“2009 Financial Crisis.

But here's a stat that might surprise youโ€ฆ

From the market peak in October 2007 to the bottom in March 2009, there were 355 trading days.

During that stretch:

๐ŸŸข 175 days were UP
๐Ÿ”ด 180 days were DOWN

Think about that.

The S&P 500 lost more than HALF of its valueโ€ฆ

Yet the market still went UP on roughly 49% of the trading days. ๐Ÿคฏ

That's an important reminder of how markets actually behave:

Market declines don't happen in a straight line.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Bear markets can have great days.
๐Ÿ“‰ Bull markets can have terrible days.

And in the middle of it all, it can be incredibly difficult to tell whether the next move is up or down.

That's one reason reacting to every headline or every bad day can be so dangerous for a long-term investor.

Sometimes you have to zoom out. ๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ“ˆ

For anyone who was investing during 2008:

๐Ÿ‘‡ Do you remember what you were thinking at the time? Were you buying, selling, or just trying not to look at your statements? ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'd genuinely love to hear what that experience was like for people who lived through it as investors.

Past performance does not guarantee future results. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and cannot be invested in directly.

๐Ÿš— A $500 car payment doesn't just cost you $500 a month.

Here's an interesting way to look at it:

Say you spend an extra $500 per month on a car for 5 years.

That's $30,000 out of pocket.

But what if that same $500/month had been invested instead?

At a hypothetical 8% annual return, after 5 years you'd have approximately:

๐Ÿ‘‰ $35,200

Now here's where it gets interestingโ€ฆ

What if after those 5 years you never added another dollar and simply left that $35,200 invested for another 30 years?

At the same hypothetical 8% annual return, it could grow to roughly:

๐Ÿคฏ $354,000

From just $30,000 in total contributions.

Now, does this mean you should drive a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am with three hubcaps for the rest of your life? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Absolutely not.

Enjoy your money. Buy things you like. That's part of the reason we work in the first place.

But it's worth remembering that every dollar you spend today has two prices:

๐Ÿ’ต What it costs you today
๐Ÿ“ˆ What that money could potentially have become in the future

Sometimes the second price is a whole lot bigger.

๐Ÿˆ College football Saturdays are BACK!

The tailgates, rivalries, fight songs, way-too-confident preseason predictionsโ€ฆ and yelling at a 20-year-old quarterback through your TV like he can hear you. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Itโ€™s good to have Saturdays back.

Thereโ€™s plenty of football on today, including some Michigan teams in action:

ใ€ฝ๏ธ Western Michigan @ Michigan โ€” 7:30 PM
๐Ÿ”ฅ Central Michigan @ New Mexico โ€” 10:00 PM

Plus some other big games around the country throughout the day. ๐Ÿˆ

Michigan State fans already got their weekend started last night with a win over Toledo. ๐ŸŸข

๐Ÿ‘‡ Whoโ€™s your team, and how many games are they winning this year?

๐Ÿ’ฐ Becoming a millionaire can actually be pretty boring.

No lottery ticket.

No inheritance from a long-lost uncle.

No finding the next Amazon before anyone else.

No turning $700 of crypto into $4 million from your couch. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Those things all can and do happen, but I wouldnโ€™t waste much time waiting for it.

Sometimes, itโ€™s literally just doing the same boring thing over and over again for a really long time.

For example:

Invest $500 per month for 30 years with a hypothetical 8% annual return and you could end up with roughly:

$745,000.

Pretty darn good.

But keep doing it for just 5 more years?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Roughly $1.15 MILLION. ๐Ÿคฏ

Over those 35 years, you would have personally contributed $210,000.

The other roughly $940,000?

Thatโ€™s investment growth.

Turns out the path to building wealth can be surprisingly uneventful:

๐Ÿ’ต Invest consistently
๐Ÿ“ˆ Stay invested
โณ Give it a whole lot of time
๐Ÿ˜ด Try not to mess with it

Boring isnโ€™t always bad.

Sometimes boring makes you a millionaire.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Retirement planning isn't just about reaching a big account balance.

A question I hear all the time is:

โ€œHow much money do I need to retire?โ€

But there may be a better question:

โ€œHow much income will I need every month once I retire?โ€

Think about what your retirement paycheck may need to cover:

๐Ÿ  Housing & property taxes
๐ŸŽ Groceries
๐Ÿš— Transportation
๐Ÿฅ Healthcare
โœˆ๏ธ Travel & hobbies
๐ŸŽ Helping family
๐Ÿ“ˆ And decades of inflation

Then consider where that income will actually come from:

Social Security.
Pensions, if you have one.
Retirement accounts.
Personal savings and investments.

Having $1 million sounds great โ€” but the number by itself doesn't tell you whether you're prepared.

Someone spending $40,000 per year and someone spending $100,000 per year can have very different retirements with the exact same amount saved.

Don't just plan for a retirement number. Plan for a retirement income. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

๐Ÿคฏ Financial Facts That Sound Fakeโ€ฆ But Are True

Invest $100 per month for 40 years and you'll personally contribute:

$48,000.

Assuming a hypothetical 10% annual return, that money could grow to approximately:

๐Ÿ’ฐ $531,000

Now here's the crazy partโ€ฆ

Wait 10 years to start and invest the exact same $100 per month for 30 years, and you'd contribute $36,000.

Your ending balance?

Only about $197,000. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

That's a difference of roughly $334,000 โ€” simply because the first investor's money had an extra 10 years to grow.

$100/month for 40 years โ†’ ~$531,000
$100/month for 30 years โ†’ ~$197,000

You don't always need a huge amount of money to start investing.

Sometimes the most valuable thing you have is time. โณ๐Ÿ“ˆ

๐Ÿˆ Some of you have spent more time researching your fantasy football draft this month than you've spent reviewing your 401(k) in the last five years. ๐Ÿ˜‚

You know your sleeper picks.

You know who you're taking in the first round.

You've watched 14 different videos explaining why THIS is finally the year your team wins the league.

Meanwhileโ€ฆ

Your 401(k): โ€œHey, remember me?โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ˜‚

In all seriousness, you don't need to check your retirement account every weekโ€”but you SHOULD know what you own, how much you're contributing, and whether your investments still make sense for your goals.

So after you finish that 3-hour mock draft tonight, maybe give your retirement plan 10 minutes too. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ“ˆ

And if you look at it and have absolutely no idea what you're looking atโ€ฆ

That's where I come in.

๐Ÿช™ Would you rather have $1,000,000 todayโ€ฆ or a penny that doubles every day for 30 days?

Most people would probably take the million.

But that penny?

Day 1: $0.01
Day 2: $0.02
Day 5: $0.16
Day 10: $5.12
Day 15: $163.84
Day 20: $5,242.88
Day 25: $167,772.16
Day 28: $1,342,177.28
Day 30: $5,368,709.12 ๐Ÿคฏ

Now, obviously, your investment account isn't going to double every day. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But the example demonstrates something incredibly important:

๐Ÿ“ˆ Compound growth can become MUCH more powerful with time.

When your money earns a return, and then those earnings have the opportunity to earn a return, growth can begin building on itself. This is when your money really begins to work for you.

And one of the biggest advantages you can give that process is something you can't buy later:

โฐ TIME.

You don't have to wait until you have thousands of dollars to start investing. Starting small and staying consistent matters more than you might think.

Give your money as much time as possible to work for you. ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Want to see what consistent investing could potentially look like over the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Let's sit down, make a plan and run the numbers.

๐Ÿ“ฌ Bold financial strategy of the day:

Receive a statement in the mail.

Open it.

Look at approximately 47 numbers you don't understand.

Nod your head like it all makes sense.

Put it in a drawer.

Repeat every 3 months for the next 30 years. ๐Ÿ˜‚

If this is your current financial planโ€ฆ we should probably talk.

Bring me the statement. Bring me the account you forgot about. Bring me the paperwork you don't understand.

You don't have to know what everything means.

That's my job. ๐Ÿคฃ

Come in, give me a call, or shoot me an email. It costs nothing to sit down and see if there's something I can help with.
