The FTC warns that dishonest companies may use paid search ads to impersonate businesses or agencies you’re trying to pay. You may think you’ve reached the right payment website, when you’re actually giving your money or information to an impersonator.

Before paying:

🔎 Look closely at the website address.
🚫 Don’t assume a sponsored result is the official website.
✅ Go directly to a company’s website or use a trusted bill or statement to find its payment information.
