For many service businesses, the cash-flow gap looks like this:

Contrary to popular thought, the best time to build next year’s budget isn’t January!

One thing I encourage business owners to do in late summer and early fall is start looking ahead to next year. Why? Because by January, Q1 is already underway.

A budget built before year-end gives you time to think through the decisions that will shape the year ahead:
- Are you planning to hire?
- Do your prices need to change?
- Are there expenses you want to add—or cut?
- What does your sales pipeline need to look like to support your goals?

For many businesses, August through October is a useful window to build next year’s budget. It gives you a working picture of expected revenue and obligations before the new year begins.

A budget isn’t just about predicting numbers. It gives you a road map for making decisions *before* you’re already three months into the year.
