America 250: 1691
In 1691, the first commercial gristmill opened in Pennsylvania, helping expand trade among the colonies. A gristmill is a water-powered mill that grinds grain into flour or meal using large millstones. These mills allowed farmers to process crops locally and turned wheat into the flour needed for daily bread.
Early mills like this helped build communities, support trade and shape food traditions that are still part of American life today.
