Ice Storm Preparation Checklist – Please Read & Share ❄️
Here is a prioritized checklist to help you, your family, and your neighbors prepare before the storm arrives Saturday evening.
As your local State Farm agent, we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you need assistance, you can reach our office at 704-733-9022 or contact State Farm Claims directly at 1-855-259-8568.
⸻
1. Immediate Power Outage Prep (Do This First)
With 0.50” or more of ice expected, power outages are likely and could last 72+ hours.
Pre-Heat Your Home:
Turn up your thermostat now while you still have power. A warmer home will stay comfortable longer once electricity is lost.
The “Icebox” Method:
• Set your fridge and freezer to their coldest settings.
• Fill empty freezer space with frozen water jugs — a full freezer holds cold up to 48 hours if unopened.
Charge All Devices:
Phones, tablets, laptops, power banks, rechargeable flashlights.
Have Cash Available:
ATMs and card machines may be down if power and internet are out.
⸻
2. Home & Property Protection
Tree Awareness:
High-impact zones will likely see severe tree damage.
• Move vehicles away from trees or into garages.
• Avoid sleeping in rooms beneath large branches.
Pipe Protection:
Locate your main water shut-off valve now. Insulate exposed pipes to reduce freezing risk.
⸻
3. Family Safety & Comfort
Layer Up:
Have heavy blankets, coats, and sleeping bags easily accessible.
Safe Lighting:
Avoid candles due to fire risk. Use battery-powered lanterns or headlamps instead.
Medical Needs:
Keep a 3–5 day supply of essential medications on hand.
⸻
4. Helping Neighbors (Community Matters)
During “travel impossible” conditions, checking on others is critical.
Pre-Check:
Reach out to elderly or vulnerable neighbors to confirm they have heat, food, and medications.
Communication Plan:
Agree on a simple visual signal (like a ribbon or curtain) to indicate someone needs help.
Resource Sharing:
Know who has a generator, chainsaw, or 4WD vehicle in case emergency access is needed.
⸻
5. Important Safety Warnings
Generator Safety:
Never run generators indoors, in garages, or near windows — carbon monoxide is deadly.
Avoid Travel:
Once freezing rain begins (around 6 PM Saturday), roads and bridges will become extremely dangerous.
Downed Power Lines:
Assume all lines are live. Stay far away and report them.
