The foundation for wise financial management is a budget. A budget is not simply an estimate of income and expenses over a given time period. Instead, a budget is you deciding where your money will go before you spend it. Budgeting is planning what to spend your money on. That is your very first financial step.

Once you have decided where you want your money to go, you need to make sure that’s also where it actually goes. The best way to do that is by tracking your expenses. You can make a plan, but a plan in and of itself will not get you where you want if you don’t execute it.

Step 1: Set a budget – plan where you want your money to go
Step 2: Track your expenses for that time period

Arriving at phase three you can finally catch your breath as you continue at a more steady pace. Phase three is where you start building some wealth. No longer are you paying interest to others due to your debt, instead, you can invest and see your money work for you.

My previous two posts cover phases one and two of the V steps and are essential to understand and complete before jumping into phase three – so make sure you check those out.

Right of the tale end of phase one comes phase two. Again, like all the other phases, the first phase is made up of 3 steps. This is where the rubber meets the road and hard work begins. Having finished phase one, phase two is all about getting above water and making sure you don’t drown.

Go to my previous post to take a look at what phase one is all about and be on the lookout for the final phase.

The V Steps are comprised of 9 steps divided into 3 phases. Like all the other phases, the first phase is made up of 3 steps. Phase one is foundational. Without it, you will not be able to make any meaningful progress. This groundwork is essential for you to succeed in the long run.

Over the coming weeks we will dive more into each of the steps – but for now, here’s a quick overview.

There are literally millions of people and families around the country whose lives are a daily grind of wondering if there will be enough money to be able to pay rent at the end of the month.

Maybe you have experienced the anxiety personal finances can bring. Maybe you know your car will break down the next time you take it above 40 mph but have no idea how to afford a new one. Maybe you are drowning in student debt and want to help your kids through college without debt but have no idea how to make that happen. Or maybe you are approaching retirement age but feel like you have to continue to work because you have set nothing aside for you to live on.

I know what it feels like – I have felt that anxiety. By God’s grace, my family and I have been able to get our feet on solid ground and have developed a plan that we are following.

We are still on the journey, but I am hoping that I will be able to help others who are feeling exactly how I did. If you are just a little curious or feel like trying, hit the link in my bio and I would be honored to do a free consultation with you.

Most people, like myself, were not taught how to manage money growing up or even later in school. As a result, they end up getting drawn into a debt-based lifestyle, spending every dollar – or more – than they make. Some even take out payday loans, rack up credit card debts with rates much higher than they realized, and drive cars with sky-high payments. As a result, they are struggling to pay rent – not to mention saving for a house downpayment or retirement.

A financial coach helps you take control of your finances. It is someone who considers your situation, paints a vision with you, develops a customized plan, and helps you get there.

My hope is that I might be able to help you!

Budgeting problems are typically a symptom of something else, something underlying.

It is easy to buy things simply to impress. That could be clothes, electronics, furniture, car, or a house. You name it, but we can also buy things to make us feel better if we are sad, anxious, or discouraged.

The reality is that you need a budget to keep you accountable and to get you where you truly want to go.

Creating and following a budget requires discipline. It is hard work. Therefore, keep the end in mind in the daily grind…

James writes that the world plans with the main motive of making money. The grand goal in life is financial gain. The priority is profit.

It is necessary and good for us to make money to support ourselves, our families and help others. But making money and having money cannot be the main aim of our lives.

Instead, no matter the arena or sphere of life, we are to do all things to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). As his creation even the ability to make money is his gift. All we have are his mercies.

Therefore, we should use our gifts and steward our money to his glory.

Here are some numbers that describe the average American household. It does not have to be a description of your situation. There is a way forward for you and your family -- no matter your stage of life!

I thought I had a good understanding of personal finance but when my wife and I moved from Denmark to the United States and had our first child I realized just how little I knew. The memory is still clear in my mind of the day I called my dad and told him how every month more money was going out than coming in. I honestly had little to no idea where the money was going. There were things we knew we wanted to save up for but could not see how we would ever get there.

Our personal finances felt like a dark room with a door that I was terrified to open. Even with a Master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School, I did not know how to achieve the financial freedom my family so desperately needed.

Once the door was opened and the room cleaned and organized, we were able to get an understanding of our spending habits. Only then were we able to envision a financial future and develop a clear plan of how to get there.

You might feel the same as we did. Whether you are experiencing the crushing weight of debt, facing a seemingly unachievable down payment, or maybe at the end of each month you have no idea where your money went and how it was spent.

Let me tell you this: there is hope.

I know there is a way out and a way forward for you because I have experienced it myself.

You can have financial peace and freedom. Our family is still on the way, but we now have clarity in our financial life. I have become a financial coach so that I might help others to experience the same and live a life that glorifies God with their finances.
