58 years ago today, an F5 tornado tore through Charles City! This colorized black and white photograph was captured by Sheriff LL Lane on the south side of town. The Sheriff would capture a couple images of this tornado. Shortly after, it would carve a path from south to north, right through the heart of Charles City. 13 people lost their lives. 450 were injured as the tornado cut across NE Iowa with a 62 mile path of destruction.

This tornado did $31,500,000 in damage, equivalent to $304,060,000 in 2026.

There have only been three F5/EF5 tornadoes in Iowa since. The next one would be minutes later near Oelwein. In 1976 an F5 would impact Jordan. The most recent EF5 struck Parkersburg in 2008.
