To amortize is to pay off a mortgage gradually by periodic payments of principal and interest. The amortization term is the time required to pay off the loan; for example, for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, the amortization term is 360 months. An amortization schedule gives a breakdown of monthly payments into principal and interest.

WELLES CROWTHER, age 24, saved at least 12 people by directing them to the stairway on the 78th floor of the South Tower after it was hit by Flight 175. After carrying an injured woman on his back down 15 floors to safety, he went back up to help others. Crowther’s body was later recovered alongside firefighters in a stairwell heading back up the tower. After RICK RESCORLA, head of security at Morgan Stanley, helped evacuate 2,700 employees from the World Trade Center, he went back into the South Tower, where he was last seen on the 10th floor, heading upward, shortly before it collapsed. Rescorla’s remains were never found.

Labor Day celebrates the amazing achievements of American workers, including securing the 40-hour work week, the minimum wage, family leave, health insurance, Social Security, and other benefits. In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks. People of all ages, including children, often faced unsafe, unsanitary working conditions. Workers courageously organized labor unions to negotiate better pay, hours, and working conditions. Congress unanimously passed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday in 1894.
