“If I set up a revocable trust, do I give up control?”

It’s a common question, and an important distinction when considering different types of trusts.
With a revocable trust, you generally maintain control of the assets during your lifetime and can make changes as your circumstances or wishes evolve. An irrevocable trust works differently and may be considered for specific estate planning goals.

Ultimately, the right structure depends on what you want the trust to accomplish.

For Financial Planning Month, we’re breaking down some of the key differences between revocable and irrevocable trusts:

The third quarter was a good reminder that markets don’t always tell one clean story. Interest rates climbed to levels not seen in roughly two decades, while major U.S. stock indexes reached new highs.

Add in the Fed’s first rate hike in three years, rising oil prices, and a midterm election just weeks away, and there’s a lot competing for investors’ attention.

In our Q4 Market Outlook, we break down what shaped the quarter, what we’re watching next, and why keeping market headlines in the context of your broader financial plan matters.

Life and the financial markets can change every day. While we can’t control every event or outcome, we can control how we respond and where we choose to focus our time and energy.

The same principle applies to financial planning. Staying disciplined, maintaining a diversified strategy, and being intentional about risk, costs, and taxes are all things within our control.

Sometimes, the best strategy is simply to focus less on what we can’t change and more on what we can.
