Crop rotation is a great way to keep soil fertile and prevent erosion, but it can also lead to innovation and more sustainable farming practices. Reid Mattive and his family grow potatoes in the San Luis Valley, and they are utilizing center-pivot irrigation on smaller fields to produce the best potatoes they can.

When the field needs a break from potatoes, they rotate in crops like radishes and mustard greens, which help enhance soil quality and use significantly less water than potatoes or other rotational crops such as barley or alfalfa. Farmers work hard to conserve the water they have and use it in an efficient way to produce food.

We welcome our members to nominate folks for these three awards that are given to four recipients each year. Not all award recipients are Farm Bureau Members, so please think outside the box for all kinds of folks who are making a difference in the agriculture space!

Drought in Colorado is heavily dependent on the winter snowpack, even across the Front Range. Rocky Ford melon farmer Glen Hirakata knows this well, and how much drought can impact his community and his growing season.

While rainfall can help supplement a year with low snowfall totals, snowpack is watched more across the winter than any other metric. Since Colorado is a headwater state, meaning we don't receive water from any other states and the water we do have flows out to other states, it is incredibly difficult to grow crops if we don't receive enough snow before planting season.

This was the last free issue of Election Watch to be sent to our Policy Watch subscribers. From now on, it will be an exclusive benefit of those who have donated $100 or more to the Colorado Farm Bureau Political Action Committee (PAC), whose sole purpose is to help elect candidates to office who support agriculture and rural Colorado.

The Colorado State Fair is taking place this year from August 28 through September 7, which is only a few months away! If you are interested in competing in one of the many categories, from livestock and floriculture to agriculture mechanics and home and farm, there is something for everyone! Competitions are now open to entries, and the deadline for most competitions is set for July 22.

The Colorado Farm Bureau (CFB) has worked with Northern Water on several initiatives, including the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP) and other water-related issues. Their headquarters in Berthoud, CO, is home to a Conservation Garden with drought-tolerant and native Colorado plants.

If you want to plant your garden or lawn with plants and grasses that are better suited for the drought, go to northernwater.org and look for the "Environment" tab and click on "Landscape Resources." There, you'll find information on native grasses, a list of plants that grow well in Colorado, and tips on irrigation.

This summer, Senior Advisor to the Commissioner in the Colorado Department of Agriculture Robert Sakata says that farmers will be in survival mode as the drought here in Colorado likely worsens. The price of feed and gas continues to increase, so farmers will need to save money where they can in order to keep their operations going until next growing season.

After we make it through this year's drought, we can focus on prepardness for the next series of challenges that lie ahead. Long-term management of things like soil health can help in these tough times.
