Had an interesting conversation today with a colleague and wanted to tag the group to see if anyone has used something similar. As we are seeing more commonly, insurance companies putting a frequency limitation of ‘Ortho 1x per lifetime’ clause written into the benefits (biggest culprits, Anthem and Delta of WA, NJ, CT) This can make it very difficult for plans with high benefits and patients that need two phases to be able to collect their full LTM benefit if we bill for Phase I and don’t collect full LTM in that first phase (essentially causing them to lose their remaining benefit)
Here is the question. In a discussion today a colleague said they spoke with an insurance rep and were told that they can overcome this challenge by simply billing a WIP or Continuation of treatment when patient is ready to start Phase II. I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around the logistics of how this would work, even what codes to use.
Have any of you been able to both successfully and legally navigate a loophole in this frequency limitation over two phases of treatment?
Would love to know if I am missing something here as we are seeing this frequency limitation becoming more common.
