She slept in a sleeping bag at her radio station for 18 months.

Lost her house. Lost her car. Single mother. Still running her business.

That came AFTER 32 banks rejected her.

And AFTER the 33rd bank finally said yes.

Here's the story nobody tells about Cathy Hughes.

Cathy Hughes wanted to buy her first radio station.

But she couldn't find a single loan officer who believed a Black-owned media company was a viable investment.

First rejection. Okay, find another bank.

Fifth rejection. This is harder than I thought.

Tenth rejection. Maybe they're right.

Twentieth rejection. I should probably quit.

Thirty-second rejection.

Most people would have stopped at five. Almost nobody makes it to 32.

But Cathy Hughes walked into that thirty-third bank.

And they said yes.

But here's where the story gets real.

Right after buying the station, she and her husband divorced.

She became a single mother.

She bought him out.

Before she could get the station profitable, she lost her house. Then her car.

For eighteen months, she slept in a sleeping bag at the radio station.

Showered at a friend's house. Raised her son. Ran her business.

Most entrepreneurs quit after one bad quarter.

Cathy Hughes lived in her business for a year and a half.

It took seven years to get that first station profitable.

Seven. Years.

But she didn't stop there.

Since then, Cathy Hughes has:
→ Acquired 50+ radio stations
→ Took her company public
→ Became the first Black woman to lead a NASDAQ company
→ Started TV One cable network

From sleeping on the floor to NASDAQ.

I know this story because Cathy Hughes has spoken at our events and is our FIRST ever Visionary in Residence for our Collaborative clients.

Here's what hit me:

The 32 rejections weren't about her business plan. They were about who she was.

Black woman. Media industry. 1980s.

The banks didn't say "your numbers don't work." They said "we don't believe in this."

That's systemic.

But here's the difference between Cathy Hughes and most entrepreneurs:'

She didn't let the system stop her. She just found the 33rd door.

That's not hustle culture. That's belief.

I've seen entrepreneurs face their own version of 32 rejections:
→ Banks that won't give them loans even with perfect credit
→ Vendors who ghost them but respond to their white competitors
→ Investors who "just don't see the market"

The system makes it harder. Not impossible. Harder.

Cathy Hughes proved that.

She didn't wait for the system to change. She didn't wait for permission. She didn't wait for it to be easy.

Now she's worth hundreds of millions.

First Black woman to lead a NASDAQ company. 50+ radio stations. A cable network.

All because she didn't stop at rejection 32.
